An educational seminar on Awareness and Good Oral Healthcare Practices to Ensure Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) organized by the National Service Training Program (NSTP) and facilitated by the CWTS and LTS component was held at the Social Hall on March 26, 2023.
Dr. Melchora V. Abonal, the Director of NSTP, gave her welcome remarks, emphasizing the importance of good oral health practices in achieving a high quality of life. The guest speaker, Dr. Melanie N. Sadang, the President of the Philippine Dental Association Camarines Sur Chapter, discussed the Chronic Illnesses Associated with Poor Oral Hygiene and provided Tips on How to maintain Good Oral Hygiene.
Dr. Sadang emphasized that poor oral hygiene can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. She recommended regular brushing, flossing, routine dental check-ups, and cleanings to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. She also highlighted the importance of a healthy diet and limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
Following the discussion, an open forum was held where students were given the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification on the topic. The next speaker was Dr. Joan A. Arcilla, University Dentist, a dentist specializing in Women’s oral health and the University Oral Health Program. She spoke about the unique oral health issues women face, such as hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, and the impact these changes can have on oral health. She also discussed the importance of oral cancer screening and prevention and the role of the University Oral Health Program in promoting good oral health practices among students.
Another open forum was held after Dr. Arcilla’s talk, allowing students to further engage with the topic and learn more about the University’s Oral Health Program. At the end of the seminar, certificates were awarded to the guest speakers, and Ms. Christine Allen Riza N. Boncodin, LTS Coordinator, gave her word of thanks to the speakers and organizers for their valuable contributions to the event.
In conclusion, the seminar served as a reminder of the importance of good oral health practices and their impact on overall health and well-being. With the guidance of dental professionals and the support of programs like the University Oral Health Program, students can take steps to maintain good Oral Health and improve their oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL).
