The two-day training on Hito (African Catfish) Breeding, Hatchery Operations, and Grow-out Production was held on October 17-18, 2024, at Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) Agriville and Learning Hub in Pili, Camarines Sur. The event, organized by the Local Government Unit of Pili in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and CBSUA, aimed to enhance sustainable aquaculture practices for residents and fishpond owners.
The program provided training on African catfish farming, focusing on techniques such as site selection, pond management, breeding, and stocking. Notable speakers included Mr. Jovan O. Caño (BFAR) discussed the biology and farming techniques of African catfish; Mr. Ramon O. Mabansay (BFAR) focused on spawning and fry care; Engr. Antonio M. Coballes Jr. (Pili National High School) introduced innovative technologies in aquaculture, including aquaponics systems and real-time monitoring using mobile apps; and Engr. Julius L. De Villa (CBSUA) discussed key design criteria for efficient aquaculture ponds.
Local officials, including Atty. Augusto Camano, a municipal councilor of Pili, expressed full support for the initiative to improve the fisheries sector. The training also emphasized the importance of collaboration between local government, educational institutions, and community stakeholders for sustainable development.
The event successfully equipped 30 participants with both technical knowledge and practical skills for improving their fish farming operations.
