The Carmel Agri-Learning Farm Inc. and the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture conducted a training program titled โScaling Rice Technologies through the System of Rice Intensification (SRI)โ under the National Rice Program of the Department of Agriculture. This significant event brought together participants from various clusters across Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Albay, and Sorsogon.
The primary goal of this initiative is to increase farmers’ incomes and improve the profitability of rice farming. By implementing the principles of SRI, farmers can significantly reduce their reliance on seeds, water, chemical fertilizers, and in some cases, labor. This innovative approach allows for higher yields and better returns from available resourcesโland, water, labor, and capitalโwhile concurrently lowering production costs.
Key figures in the implementation of this essential program include Santiago K. Cervantes and his wife, Carmelita N. Cervantes, owners of Carmel Agri-Learning Farm Inc. Their commitment, alongside contributions from various partner institutions, has paved the way for future successes in the project. Training sessions took place at numerous venues, including the Carmel Agri-Learning Farm Inc., Pili, Camarines Sur (September 11-12, 2024), Camarines Sur Multipurpose Cooperative, Pili, Camarines Sur (October 14-15, 2024), the Christian Farmers Training Center, Ragay, Camarines Sur (November 6-7, 2024), and the Green Thumb Rice Farm, Pilar Sorsogon (November 8-9, 2024), ensuring broad accessibility and engagement among participants.
Looking ahead, the project will continue to support beneficiary farmers, with regular monitoring processes established to ensure the effective application of SRI technologies. This ongoing commitment aims to empower local farmers and drive sustainable agricultural practices within the community.
