CEFS STUDENTS SNAG AWARDS AT PAEStigan X

Students from the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering – College of Engineering and Food Science participated in the PAEStigan X: the State Colleges and Universities National PAES Quiz Contest with the theme “PAEStigan X: Fostering Excellence to Future Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers toward Food Resiliency and Sovereignty,” on February 23-24, 2024, at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

PAEStigan was organized by the UP Society of Agricultural Engineering Students (UP SAGES), a pioneer academic organization of the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology (CEAT) at the UPLB.

The two teams from CBSUA competing for the National Quiz Contest ranked 7th and 12th among the 40 teams from different state colleges and universities throughout the country. These students demonstrated their proficiency in both practical and theoretical aspects of the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards (PAES) (Volumes I-XI). The teams, coached by Engr. Monica A. Filio, are as follows:

Team 1 – Ranked 7th
Raul Jr D. Cezar – Leader
Anjo M. Lomenario
Juville M. Visario

Team 2 – Ranked 12th
Lyka Jean S. De Leon – Leader
Juliane A. Orlina
Mae Kinly B. Quintana

Together with them are five students who participated in events highlighting students’ skills and practical knowledge in several applications of the ABE field with Engr. Lynet C. Alto as their coach. Mr. Anthon Jose I. Cabalquinto and Mr. Gabriel C. Ibarreta ranked 5th among the 20 participating schools. The criteria for judging in this event include the tractor maneuvering skills, observance of safety, and speed (time). Ms. Francel C. Flororita represented the CBSUA-CEFS-DABE in the machine parts identification. Five stations were assigned different machinery: the internal combustion engine, hand tractor, rice drum seeder, reaper, and 4WD tractor. Ms. Flororita ranked 8th among the 22 participating schools. Mr. Joshua T. Aguila participated in the CAD challenge and ranked 11th among all the 17 participants. The students were given three challenges with different levels of difficulty. Their performance was evaluated based on accuracy, completeness, and neatness. The representative for the QGIS challenge, Mr. Jodel S. Bautista, garnered the highest score, making him the champion for the said event. He was able to outdo the other 17 participants in the development of a suitability map using the provided data.

This highly anticipated event for aspirant ABEs aimed to: 1) challenge the proficiency of Agricultural Engineering students with PAES; 2) expose the participants to the actual application and development of PAES standards; 3) promote camaraderie between and among participants; and to 4) bolster the presence and relevance of the profession in the industry and the spheres of research, development, and extension.

The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture has participated in this event since 2011. Before the event’s four-year break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, CBSUA was acclaimed as the Champion of PAEStigan IV, V, VII, and IX; 2nd Runner-Up in PAEStigan VI; 3rd Runner-Up in PAEStigan I and VIII; and 5th Runner-Up in PAEStigan III. |𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘳.
