CBSUA’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY: TACKLING FOOD WASTE AND PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) has long been a pioneer in promoting sustainability, and its recent efforts to address food waste reflect a continued commitment to environmental stewardship. Spearheaded by the CBSUA Resilience Center, the university has rolled out a series of policies and initiatives designed to reduce food waste and educate the campus community on its environmental and social impacts.

In pursuit of its sustainability objectives, CBSUA has closely monitored its waste generation, focusing particularly on biodegradable waste, which includes food scraps. Data collected over recent periods reveals that CBSUA generated a total of 117.98 metric tons of food waste. This uptick in food waste correlates with the gradual reopening of campus facilities post-pandemic, as increased food consumption during in-person classes has led to greater waste. These figures emphasize the need for immediate and sustainable solutions to tackle food waste at the university.

CBSUA’s environmental stewardship is not limited to managing waste. As part of its holistic approach to sustainability, the university has adopted a range of eco-friendly initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. One of the most notable initiatives is the implementation of composting systems for biodegradable waste. CBSUA also employs a waste-to-energy approach, where food waste is converted into feed for vermi worms and swine. This process not only reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills but also supports the university’s circular economy, transforming waste into valuable resources for other sectors of its operations.

These initiatives are part of CBSUA’s broader commitment to sustainability, which aligns with international environmental management standards such as ISO 14000. The university’s ongoing efforts to improve its environmental management practices showcase its dedication to creating a sustainable future for both its students and the wider community.

In its pursuit of sustainability, CBSUA strives to set an example for other educational institutions and local communities. Through consistent monitoring, waste reduction, and innovative solutions like composting and waste-to-energy systems, the university is demonstrating that even small, localized actions can lead to significant, positive environmental outcomes. CBSUA’s initiatives reflect a culture of sustainability that extends beyond the campus, inspiring a more eco-conscious community.

By taking these proactive steps, CBSUA is not just reducing its environmental impact; it is also cultivating a mindset of environmental responsibility among its students, faculty, and staff. Through such efforts, the university is paving the way for a future where sustainability is integral to the daily lives of all its stakeholders.”
