Goal 16 aims to foster peaceful, inclusive societies, ensure universal access to justice, and build accountable, effective institutions. It emphasizes the need for people worldwide to live free from violence, regardless of background or identity.
Despite this goal, global peace efforts are undermined by conflicts, with 2022 seeing a significant increase in conflict-related civilian deaths, driven largely by the war in Ukraine. Armed violence, insecurity, and weak rule of law hinder development and contribute to widespread issues like sexual violence, crime, and exploitation in conflict zones.
Collaboration among governments, civil society, and communities is crucial to address these challenges. This requires a focus on upholding human rights, strengthening legal frameworks, reducing illicit arms flows, combating corruption, and promoting inclusive governance for sustainable peace.
