True to the University and CHED’s goal to provide more avenues for Bikolano students to excel in sports and dance, the University Sports Development Center led this year’s Bicol Regional Dancesports Training Workshop on July 25-29, 2022, at the LRV Student Atrium.
The opening program commenced on July 25, 2022, the University President, Dr. Alberto N. Naperi; Sports Director and the proponent of the event, Prof. Alejandro P. Saluna; the Chairman, Dr. Jiye A. Margate; the CHED Focal Person for Sports, Dr. Michael B. Mallari; the five distinguished resource speakers: Mr. Edgardo C. Borromeo, Mr. Adolfo F. Laurio Jr., Mr. Gelmar B. Ballovar, Ms. Charlea Y. Lagaras, together with the CHED Project Lead on Sports Development and Management Unit, Ms. Ana Dulce B. Yango, and the participants from the different schools in the region graced the said event.
The second, third, and fourth days were filled with lectures, demonstrations, and workshops on Latin and Standard dances facilitated by the invited resource speaker. On the last day of the workshop, July 29, 2022, the guests and participants arrived on time and commenced the program at exactly 8:00 am. The morning session focused on the rehearsal for the culminating activity and recitals to showcase what they have learned in the duration of the training workshop. The resource speakers keenly observed the proper execution of the dance and guided the participants.
The closing program and culminating activity start at exactly 1:00 pm, hosted by Ms. Cristia Shiena, University PIO. They shared an audio-visual presentation of the compiled photos and videos from the 5-day training workshop prepared by Mr. John Kelly Alpapara. During the culminating activity and recitals, the resource speakers were the adjudicators for the friendly competition of the participants. There was special recognition and awards for the participants who performed well and were chosen by the adjudicators. The awards were as follows; Best Couple (Latin), Best Couple (Standard), Best Solo Latin Category for Rumba, Cha-cha, and Jive, and the Best Solo Standard for Waltz, Tango, and Quickstep, which received a certificate and a simple token. Before the recital proper, two resource speakers, Ms. Charlea and Mr. Gelmar performed a tribute dance, adding to the participants’ excitement and confidence. The competition started with a presentation and the performers’ entrance to the dance floor. The first set is the couple dance (Latin and Standard), followed by the Men Solo Dance (Latin and Standard) and Women’s Solo Dance (Latin and Standard). As everyone awaited the results of the tabulation of the scores by the adjudicators, there was a surprise intermission performance from the dancing legend of the University, Dr. Jiye A. Margate, together with Mr. Adulfo F. Laurio Jr., one of the resource speakers. Also, a representative from the participants was called to have their impression and take away from the 5-day training workshop. Awarding certificates to the resource speakers, participants, and winners were facilitated by the organizing committee and awarded by Dr. Margate, Prof. Saluna, and the resource speakers. There was a photo opportunity for all the participants with the resource speakers after the awarding ceremony.
