The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture in collaboration with the Municipal Agriculture Office and the Local Government of Baao conducted a free castration program for cats and dogs on November 29, 2024, at the Municipal Covered Court of Baao. The Municipal Agriculture Office held this initiative to address the growing concern of stray animal populations in the municipality.
In an interview with Ms. Aline A. Bravo, the Municipal Agriculture Officer of LGU Baao, she highlighted that the activity was conducted 15 years ago, which may be one of the causes of the increasing number of stray cats and dogs in the municipality.
The CBSUA-College of Veterinary Medicine recognizes this situation as one of the important concerns to be addressed since the public health and welfare of locals are compromised. Dr. Shiloh Grace Perdon and Dr. Marian Baldonado, faculty from the College of Veterinary Medicine, lead the team from the University to perform free castration surgery. They were assisted by 10 junior clinicians who applied their knowledge to becoming future veterinarians.
Residents and pet owners benefited from the free veterinary services including consultation for their pets and were also oriented on becoming responsible pet owners. The program’s revival demonstrates LGU Baao’s commitment to addressing long-standing issues.
For the succeeding year, LGU Baao wanted to establish a formal partnership with CBSUA to reduce stray animal populations, promote animal welfare, and foster community engagement to achieve one-health. | 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘳. 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘯
