On March 19, 2024, the Bayanihang Pagbibinhi sa Barangay (BANHI) Project was officially handed over to Cabatuan and Monte Calvario in Buhi, Camarines Sur, by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency.
The handover ceremony was conducted separately in two barangays and was attended by barangay officials, farmers, project managers from ADRA Philippines, and CBSUA as partner implementer. During the ceremony, Ms. Jessa Mae G. Azarcon, the ADRA’s BANHI Food Security
Officer, emphasized the project’s main goalโto help the community establish a sustainable source of vegetable planting materials to combat food insufficiency in the
area. The project also aims to provide nutritious food and decrease malnutrition incidence in Buhi, especially among children aged five years and below.
Mr. Joseph V. Urlanda, the OIC Project Manager of Project TOGETHER (the mother project of BANHI), expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the project’s success. Urlanda also encouraged community members to participate in and support the project, improve its implementation, and elevate the living standards of the project beneficiaries.
Hon. Felimon Calabines, the Barangay Captain of Cabatuan, and Hon. Jejomar C. Aguilar, the Punong Barangay of Monte Calvario, extended their heartfelt support to the project and ensured its development in succeeding years.
The event also highlighted the component projects of BANHI, which include Vermicomposting, Seed banking, Organic Vegetable Garden, and Nursery Establishment. ADRA Philippines provided a complete set of gardening tools for the project’s sustainable development. Representing CBSUA, Professor Vladimir R. Foronda, the Director of the Extension Services Division, gave a message and challenge to the officials of Barangay Cabatuan and Monte Calvario to support the project’s development by creating a barangay ordinance focusing on urban gardening per household and allocating a budget for agricultural development. Dr. Foronda also ensured the University’s support by providing technical assistance to improve their capacity related to agriculture, DRR, and other services. CBSUA is the partner institution of ADRA in capacitating beneficiaries in nursery establishment and seed banking.
After the handover ceremony, participants had the opportunity to tour the BANHI site.
