The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is one of the new colleges in the university which offers most of the general education subjects required of CBSUA students. It has two-degree programs namely Bachelor of Sciences in Environmental Science (BSES) and Bachelor of Science in Biology (BSBio).
History
The College of Arts and Sciences of the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture was formerly known as the Institute of Arts and Sciences in 2008 with Prof. Inigo Ibarrientos as its unit head. Its departments were Humanities, Physical Education, Math, and Physical Science (MPS).
The said institute was renamed College of Arts and Sciences in 2010 with its three departments namely: Humanities, Physical Education, and Natural and Applied Sciences. Dr. Gloria B. Osea (2012 – 2014) was appointed as the first dean of the college. She was succeeded by Dr. Ma. Rowena M. Bayrante (2015 – 2018). Then in 2019, Prof.Jeniffer S. Francisco was appointed and became the new dean of the CAS. The said college is recently composed of two programs and one department namely: BS Biology, BS Environmental Sciences Programs and Department of Humanities, Math, Science and Technology, Physical Education, and ICT.
The Bachelor of Science in Biology (BSBio) was offered by the CAS in 2011. While the Bachelor of Sciences in Environmental Science (BSES) was previously offered by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2001 and was transferred to CAS in 2015 as an allied field of Biology. This was done to address the recommendation of the CHED with regards to the granting of the Certificate Program Compliance for the BSES which was offered in the latter college.
At present, the BS Biology program is Level-I Accredited (May 16, 2019 – May 15, 2022) while the BS Environmental Science is Level III Reaccredited (Nov. 16, 2017 –Nov. 15, 2021).
The faculty members of the College of Arts and Sciences engage in various research endeavors in areas including environmental resource inventory and monitoring, pollution and waste management, natural resource management, biology education, language literature and culture, multi-media literacy development, multi-media communication, information technology, information system development, gender and development, social and behavioral science research, among others. Also, the said college conducts extension activities ranging from training programs, outreach activities, seminars, webinars, and art performances.
