SDG 2030 Initiatives
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Goal 7 focuses on providing universal access to clean and affordable energy, which is essential for sectors like agriculture, business, healthcare, education, and transportation. Although the world is progressing toward sustainable energy targets, the current pace is insufficient; by 2030, an estimated 660 million people could remain without electricity, and nearly 2 billion may still use polluting fuels for cooking.
Energy is central to daily life, yet its consumption drives climate change, accounting for about 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions. From 2015 to 2021, global access to electricity rose from 87% to 91%.
Achieving universal access to affordable energy by 2030 requires investments in clean energy sources like solar, wind, and thermal. Expanding infrastructure and updating technology in developing countries are key to fostering economic growth while supporting environmental sustainability.
Policies and Guidelines
CBSUA has implemented a comprehensive carbon management process focused on reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The key initiatives include:
a. University Vehicle Policy:
Developed by the Physical Plant Development Services, this policy limits vehicular movement within the campus for a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly environment. By reducing traffic congestion and parking demands, the policy encourages alternative, eco-friendly transportation methods such as walking, cycling, and public transport, reducing carbon emissions and promotes a greener campus environment.
b. Vehicle Replacement and Repurposing Program:
Also established by the Physical Plant Development Services, this program provides guidelines for phasing out older, less efficient university vehicles after 10 to 15 years of service. Repurposed vehicles will serve as “learning buses,” displaying the university’s academic programs and pilot courses, and acting as mobile platforms for community engagement and educational outreach. The program supports sustainable practices by reducing waste through vehicle repurposing and encouraging energy-efficient transportation options.
c. Environmental Policies and Guidelines:
Crafted by the Resilience Center, these guidelines include a strict mandate (Section 4.5) prohibiting black smoke-emitting or smoke-belching vehicles on university grounds, thereby enhancing air quality and furthering CBSUA’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
