Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) continues to elevate its research profile as Dr. Marco Stefan B. Lagman, a faculty member, won the prestigious Best Paper Award for his outstanding research titled “Chinese Businesses in the Province of Albay and Ambos Camarines, 1887-1897,โ in the recently concluded 2024 International Conference on Philippine Studies held on November 25-26, 2024, at the Villa Caceres Hotel in Naga City.
The conference, themed “Filipino-Chinese Histories and Discourses in Multidisciplinary Lenses,” brought together a diverse group of experts to explore the intricate historical and cultural connections between Filipinos and Chinese. Dr. Lagman’s research aligns perfectly with this theme, delving into the fascinating world of Chinese migration, cultural integration, and identity formation in the Bicol region during the late 19th century.
By meticulously analyzing โContribucion Industrialโ records, Dr. Lagman’s study offers a rich and detailed picture of Chinese commercial activities in Albay and Camarines provinces. His findings reveal the significant economic impact of Chinese merchants on the region, highlighting their diverse business ventures, from trading to artisanal production. Moreover, the study employs innovative mapping techniques to visualize the spatial distribution of Chinese businesses, providing a more comprehensive understanding of their commercial networks.
Dr. Lagman’s research not only contributes to the field of Philippine history but also sheds light on the complex interplay between commerce, culture, and identity. His work highlights the importance of historical research in fostering intercultural understanding and appreciation. Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Lagman is a dedicated educator, currently serving as a Professor I at CBSUA Pili Campus. He teaches Philippine History and Contemporary World courses at the General Education Department of the College of Arts and Sciences.
