Central Bicol State University of Agriculture Sipocot, in partnership with the Bicol Medical Center- Bloodbank and the Sipocot Rural Health Unit led the Mass Blood Donation and Mini-Health Symposium about HIV/AIDS on October 18, 2023, at the Cultural Hall of said municipality.
The event, which aimed to address critical health issues within the community while promoting the importance of blood donation, was attended by employees and students from the four colleges of Sipocot Campus.
Raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and encouraging blood donation as a vital act of community service, the symposium featured several informative sessions led by experts in the fields of HIV/AIDS and public health such as Understanding HIV/AIDS where presentations covered essential topics such as the transmission of HIV, its impact on health, and the importance of early diagnosis dispelling myths and reducing the stigma associated with the disease; and prevention and treatment where experts discussed various prevention strategies, including safe sex practices, regular testing, and the role of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in managing HIV. Participants were likewise encouraged to seek testing and treatment options available in their area.
Meanwhile, over 100 volunteers donated, resulting in 101 bags of blood collected during the drive for patients needing transfusions due to various medical conditions. Each donor received a token of appreciation for their contribution, reinforcing the message that donating blood is a noble act that can save lives.
“I was able to gain increased awareness of HIV/AIDS issues and the significance of regular blood donation,” a participant remarked. Involving the community fostered a sense of responsibility among attendees, encouraging them to participate in future health initiatives. Future initiatives that effectively combine education with community action will continue fostering well-informed and engaged people.
