CBSUA PILI CONDUCTS EARTHQUAKE EVACUATION DRILL FOR DORMERS

In a simulated earthquake scenario, the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) Pili Campus evacuated over 200 students from damaged dormitories. The drill, held on October 4, 2024, aimed to test the campus’ preparedness for natural disasters and ensure the safety of its students, especially those residing in on-campus housing.

The simulation involved an intensity 4 earthquake that caused damage to the dormitories, prompting the evacuation of 238 students. While eight students sustained minor injuries, there were no fatalities. The drill was led by the university’s Resilience Center and student-led organizations.

“Our dormitories are home to many students who come from far-flung areas,” said a Dr. Philip N. Talay, the Director of the CBSUA Resilience Center. “Conducting regular earthquake evacuation drills, especially for dormers, is crucial as they spend a significant amount of time on campus. These drills help reinforce safety practices and ensure that our students are prepared for any emergency.”

The CBSUA Red Cross Youth Council, the Gryphon, and the CBSUA Disaster Risk Response Office Unit led by their organizationsโ€™ president and advisers, worked in collaboration with the Resilience Center to conduct the drill. The student-led organizations played a vital role in the success of the activity, demonstrating their skills, knowledge, and commitment to disaster preparedness.

Supervising the drill were Dr. Talay, and Mr. Genlud S. Bascuna, the newly appointed Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer. They were assisted by Mr. Karl Jayson Collat, the Center Secretary.

The successful completion of the earthquake evacuation drill highlights CBSUA Pili’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students and staff. By regularly conducting such simulations, the university is strengthening its disaster response capabilities and fostering a culture of preparedness among its community.
