Dr. Mark Jaypee Gonzales, a faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine, presented the findings of a research survey on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in member institutions of the Asian Association of Veterinary Students (AAVS) on June 29, 2023. The survey, which was distributed from May to June 2023, aimed to assess the status of DEI efforts within veterinary education across Asian countries.
The Veterinary Education Research – Working Group (VER-WG) of AAVS, initiated the survey and aimed to assess the status of DEI efforts within veterinary education across Asian countries. Recognizing the significance of DEI in promoting excellence and addressing systemic disparities, their research sought to understand the existing initiatives, challenges, and opportunities for growth in member institutions of AAVS. The VER-WG is also membered by Dr. Ilene B. Mirabeles and Dr. Rochelle F. Arrabis from CVM, along with other faculty members all over Asia.
Findings reveal that several Asian institutions offering Veterinary Medicine, including CBSUA, have already made commendable advancements in implementing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. However, a larger majority have not yet implemented these initiatives.
Moving forward, the VEWG plans to utilize the insights gained from the survey to develop a comprehensive framework for promoting DEI within Asia. This framework will include guidelines, best practices, and recommendations to facilitate the implementation of robust DEI initiatives across Asian veterinary schools and colleges. The research survey conducted by the Veterinary Education Research – Working Group of AAVS serves as an important step towards creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive veterinary profession in Asia. | 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘋𝘳.
