CBSUA Acquires Derwent Access Through DOST-PCAARRD and IPOPHL Under the auspices of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) recently acquired access to Derwent Innovation, an online patent database owned by Clarivate.
A global analytics company, Clarivate provides customers critical data and information, and workflow solutions to fuel innovation through paid subscription. Funding was facilitated through the Support to the University’s Strategies in Technology Acceleration Initiatives by Nurturing Intellectual Property-Technology Business Management (SUSTAIN IP-TBM) Project of DOST-PCAARRD, that which is in its third year of implementation since inception. Derwent Innovation is an exhaustive database of patented technologies from more than 40 patenting offices worldwide, and from which various analytics reports can be generated to aid in innovative pursuits such as research.
According to Prof. Julieta Casaul, Project Staff Level 3 of the CBSUA component of SUSTAIN IP-TBM, the Derwent Innovation access “will enhance the capacity of CBSUA researchers to craft highly patentable research proposals for external or institutional funding.” She further highlighted the willingness of the IP-TBM Project to conduct patent search activities for research proposals and outputs, the latter she said to eventually evaluate “the patent potential of…technologies.” With the help of Derwent Innovation, researchers may be able to determine the status of various fields of research, thereby identifying areas with room for growth. With an exhaustive worldwide database of patent technologies, Derwent Innovation is a potent tool giving interactive results such as IP lifecycle management and freedom to operate of an invention. It can give insightful information, basic of which is the direction to take in furthering innovation. With technologies popping up worldwide to address a long list of universal problems, Derwent Innovation essentially is a modern-day tool for institutions seeking innovative opportunities, asset management and protection, and risk mitigation. As CBSUA is committed to lead innovations in instruction, research, extension and resource generation, Derwent Innovation is a valued addition to its growing toolset in fulfilling the mandate of the university.
