CDE’S GENES EXTENSION PROGRAM SETS GROUNDWORK FOR STRONGER SCIENCE EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS

As part of the initial activities of the GENES Program, short for Guided Education through the Now Normal Extension in Science Education Program, a team, composed of faculty experts from the College of Development Education (CDE), conducted a series of inception meetings with its target partner institutions on May 5, 2025.

The GENES Program of the College of Development Education (CDE) and Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (BSED) aim to support schools in enhancing science education by providing targeted teacher training in the specific areas such as Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge assessment, leading to the attainment of the science curriculum guide ultimate goals – scientific literacy through various professional development actions and to create Center for Lifelong Science Learning which will cater in helping by providing sources of science books, articles, researches and creative works for teachers, students and stakeholders.

The team was led by Program Leader Sir Kennedy Beltran, with College Dean Dr. Melinda Parro-Pan, Project Leader Prof. Mary Grace Polvoriza, and Ms. Zyra B. Hila, Extension Services Division staff.

The team first visited Goa Community College (GCC), where they were warmly received by Dr. Nita V. Morallo, GCC President, and Dr. Minda P. Formalejo, Dean of the College. They then proceeded to San Rafael National High School in Tigaon, where they met with the school principal, Mr. Joel B. Dela Vega, and designated focal person Mr. Joseph Pablico Brixuela.

Following this, the team visited San Jose National High School for a meeting with the school principal, Dr. Marijane B. Matucad, and focal person Madam Glenda Liza Sales-Tornilla. Lastly, they had a brief discussion with Principal IV Madam Belen N. Adriatico at Rodriguez National High School.

All visited schools responded positively and expressed their willingness to participate in the GENES Program. In addition, the team also coordinated with Governor Mariano E. Villafuerte High School and Pili National High School, which are likewise targeted as program partners. Across all engagements, the partners conveyed strong support for the initiative, recognizing its potential to enhance academic standards, empower educators, and enrich science learning experiences in their respective institutions.
