Aimed at empowering senior citizens through sustainable livelihood and improved nutrition, a two-day training titled โMushroom Production for Income and Nutrition: Innovative Sustainable Tropical Mushroom Cultivationโ was successfully conducted on April 29โ30, 2025, in Sibujo, Libmanan, Camarines Sur.
This initiative was a collaborative effort between the Office of the Senior Citizens Affair (OSCA)โSipocot and the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA). The training was spearheaded by proponents Dr. Arce D. Bellere, Mr. Tom A. Rodriguez, and Ms. Kyla D. Madlangbayan, and featured expert lectures and practical demonstrations by Dr. Bellere, Mr. Rodriguez, and Mr. Jovit E. Chavez. The program focused on equipping elderly participants with the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to cultivate tropical mushrooms using sustainable, low-cost methods suitable for backyard production.
Participants were trained in spawn production, substrate preparation, cultivation techniques, and post-harvest handling, while also learning about the health benefits of mushrooms, particularly their high protein content, immune-boosting properties, and suitability for aging diets. This initiative promotes not only nutritional wellness but also provides an opportunity for economic participation among the elderly.
By combining the resources and expertise of CBSUA with the community outreach of OSCA, this program stands as a model of effective partnership for inclusive, sustainable development. It affirms that with proper support and training, senior citizens can continue to thrive, contribute, and lead productive lives within their communities.
