To strengthen the capabilities of local stakeholders in native cattle care, the Department of AgricultureโAgricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) conducted a Training of Trainers on Native Cattle Production and Management from June 2 to 5, 2025, in San Agustin, Pili, Camarines Sur. The training featured expert resource speakers from the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) and the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 5 (DA RFO 5).
The activity focused on an introduction to the cattle industry, large ruminant reproductive systems, diseases, cattle breeding, native cattle management, record keeping, and meat processing. CBSUA faculty members served as resource speakers for the activity, together with experts from the Department of Agriculture RFO 5.
Dr. Ilene B. Mirabeles discussed the cattle industry, its economic opportunities, the large ruminant reproductive system, and health and diseases, while Carmencita I. Portugal focused on cattle breeding. Andrew S. Arellano discussed record keeping and cost and return analysis. Additionally, Dr. Nino Rey C. Dizon from DA RFO 5 addressed native cattle management, while Ian Darrell Bordon and Ken Jose Penaserada concentrated on processing native cattle meat.
On the fourth day of the training, participants conducted a field visit to the CBSUA Animal Farm and Forage Area. They engaged in hands-on activities such as grass and forage identification, silage making, hoof trimming, and dehorning of large ruminants.
