The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) through its Technology Commercialization and Promotion Division (TCPD) successfully held a free training today, March 28, 2025 at the CBSUA Agriville and Learning Hub, focusing on cutting-edge hydroponics technologies in farming.

The event drew a diverse group of participants, including eager students, dedicated teachers, and enthusiastic farming advocates, all keen to explore the transformative potential of hydroponics in modern agriculture. Mr. Buster A. Ibarbia, Project Development Officer 3, warmly welcomed the attendees, highlighting the significance of such initiatives in advancing agricultural practices.

Dr. Jayson M. Dañas, Director of the TCPD, conveyed his optimism regarding the increasing interest of young people in agriculture, even amidst the rapid advancements in other fields. “I am really happy to see that the majority of our participants today are youths. This gives me hope that the young generation are still interested in agriculture. Magtulungan po tayo para maitaas natin ang sektor ng agrikultura,” he emphasized.

Dr. Ramona Isabel S. Ramirez, Vice President for Research and Innovation, delivered an inspiring address, acknowledging the dedication of youth pursuing agriculture despite the allure of technologies like Artificial Intelligence and communication innovations. “It is amazing to see that, despite the presence of other technologies, there are still people like you who are passionate about agriculture,” she remarked. Dr. Ramirez also commended the TCPD team for their continuous innovation, even when facing financial constraints, adding, “CBSUA Agriville is promoting a different framework, and we are happy to serve those who are eager to learn.”

The morning sessions commenced with a foundational lecture on the “Fundamentals of Hydroponics,” followed by a practical session on “Setting up a Hydroponics System,” expertly led by Engr. Dulce Maria Abigail Alto Jastio from the College of Engineering and Food Sciences (CEFS). These sessions provided a solid base for understanding hydroponic farming methods. In the afternoon, participants were given a tour of the CBSUA Commercial Greenhouse, where Engr. Jastio continued with an insightful lecture and hands-on demonstration on “Nutrient Management and Plant Care.” Her final session delved into “Hydroponics for Business and Sustainability,” offering valuable perspectives on the economic viability of hydroponic farming.

Mr. Jenbert Sales, a successful lettuce grower, further enriched the discussion by sharing his expertise in the marketing and business aspects of hydroponics, providing a comprehensive overview of the sector’s potential. An engaging open forum allowed attendees to ask questions and clarify their understanding. Director Frilliane Mae Bicaldo of UBAO also addressed the audience on the growing importance of e-marketing in contemporary agriculture.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Arch. Ryan Albaniel, Project Development Officer 1, who expressed his sincere appreciation to all the participants for their active engagement and enthusiasm. This informative event at the CBSUA Agriville and Learning Hub underscored the critical role of innovative farming technologies, particularly hydroponics, in shaping the future of agriculture. The enthusiastic participation of young individuals offers a promising outlook for the growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector in the years ahead.
